Dentures (Full and Partial)
For patients who are missing all or most of their teeth, dentures are one of the most popular tooth-replacement options available. At ONE Dental, we have a variety of dentures available to our patients, so we can work with you to determine the type of denture that’s best for your lifestyle and needs.
What Are Dentures?
Dentures are a tooth replacement option designed to replace the top arch of teeth, bottom arch of teeth, or both rows of teeth.
Dentures consist of an arch of replacement teeth supported by a “gum” of soft plastic designed to look natural in the mouth while holding the entire dental device in place.
A top denture’s construction spans the entire roof of the mouth, while a bottom denture simply runs along and fits over the alveolar ridge.
What Options Are Available With Dentures?
Full vs. Partial
Full dentures are those designed to entirely replace one or both arches of teeth. Partial dentures are designed to replace just a portion of missing teeth.
Removable vs. Permanent
Traditional dentures and implant-supported dentures (also called snap-on or overdentures) are removable and can be taken out of the mouth for cleaning and maintenance.
All-on-4 dentures, which are supported by and permanently fixed to four strategically placed dental implants, cannot be removed (except by a dentist for any necessary maintenance).
What To Expect When Getting Dentures
The process for getting dentures can vary depending on whether or not you need to have any remaining teeth extracted before we take digital impressions of your mouth and fit your new dentures. Additionally, the process will be slightly different and lengthier if you are being fitted for implant-supported dentures, as this requires you to undergo the dental implant placement process.
If necessary, getting dentures might begin with a tooth extraction and/or the implant placement process and a healing period. After which, we schedule one appointment to take digital impressions of your mouth and another appointment to ensure your new dentures are a perfect fit.
Ongoing Denture Care and Adjustments
When you wear dentures, it is still important to visit the dentist regularly for checkups and denture adjustments. In addition to examining your gums, jawbone, and performing a routine oral cancer screening, we can also help maintain your dentures so they continue looking, feeling, and working great.
Over time, the muscle mass and bone structure in and around our mouths can change shape, affecting how your dentures fit and feel inside your mouth. With regular checkups, we can continue adjusting the fit of your dentures to ensure they always feel comfortable and as natural as they can be.
