Tooth Extractions

Our dentists at ONE Dental always prioritize the health and preservation of our patients’ natural teeth. Sometimes, however, whether due to injury, age, disease, or other types of problems, there might not be anything we can do to save a natural tooth. In these cases, tooth extraction is necessary to prevent further problems that could harm the neighboring teeth.

What Is a Tooth Extraction?

A tooth extraction is a simple dental procedure to remove a compromised tooth.

When Does a Tooth Need To Be Removed?

Not every damaged, infected, or injured tooth needs to be removed. In many cases, we can save the tooth using a variety of restorative dental treatments. In the following situations, however, tooth extraction is typically necessary:

We do everything we can to help our patients protect, preserve, and save their natural teeth, and we only recommend tooth extraction as a last resort.

What To Expect During a Tooth Extraction

Prior to your tooth extraction, we take a set of dental X-rays to evaluate the structure of your problematic tooth and determine the type of extraction process that is most appropriate for you. There are two types of tooth extraction procedures, and the process for each varies slightly. However, both procedures begin with administering a local anesthetic that ensures you experience no pain or discomfort during the extraction.
Simple Extractions
Simple tooth extractions occur when a tooth is exposed above the gum line and its roots are intact and stable enough to simply be pulled. Once the patient is thoroughly anesthetized, the dentist uses a pair of forceps to gently rock the tooth back and forth, loosening it in its socket. Once loose enough, we simply pull the tooth.
Surgical Extractions
Surgical extractions are slightly more complex than simple extractions. This type of extraction is typically needed when a tooth is impacted, has not erupted above the gum line, or when a tooth and its roots are not intact or are too weak to be pulled without breaking apart.
