While veneers have countless uses in cosmetic dentistry, they do not strengthen the teeth or actually correct dental issues. As a result, patients who have compromised teeth might be better treated with dental restorations designed to strengthen the teeth and improve their look, such as a dental crown.
What To Expect When Getting Veneers
Porcelain veneers usually require two dental appointments. Our dentist talks with you about your smile goals during the first appointment and helps you design your new set of veneers using our digital smile design system.
We then prepare the surface of your teeth for receiving veneers, which requires shaving off a thin layer of enamel so that your veneers fit evenly on your teeth. We take digital impressions and send this information along with the design for your new set of veneers to a dental manufacturing lab.
Before you go home, we cover your teeth with a composite resin dental bonding to protect them while we await your new set of veneers.
Once the veneers are ready, we schedule you for your veneer placement appointment, during which we remove the protective dental bonding, clean your teeth, and permanently cement your new veneers into place.
Both appointments for receiving veneers require a local anesthetic to prevent any discomfort during the tooth preparation and veneer placement processes.
How Long Do Veneers Last?
Porcelain is a highly durable material, and, although they look delicate, porcelain veneers are surprisingly strong and long-lasting. With proper care, porcelain veneers can last 10 to 20 years.
To get the most out of your veneers, avoid chewing on hard objects or foods. Take steps to protect your teeth from grinding and clenching associated with bruxism and TMJ disorder, and wear an athletic mouthguard when participating in physical activities.
Porcelain veneers are a permanent cosmetic treatment. So, if one of your veneers does become damaged, it will need to be replaced to maintain the health of your natural tooth.
